Friends of the Howe House Receives Prestigious Montclair NAACP Award
The community fighting to preserve Montclair’s first home owned by a freed slave received the prestigious Thurgood Marshall Freedom Fund Award at the annual Montclair NAACP awards ceremony. The award follows almost a year of efforts to rescue the Howe House from being sold to investors, raise funds to secure its sale, and fund-raising and awareness-raising to preserve its future.
Montclair Township issues Juneteenth Proclamation, naming FOHH as Community Partner
On June 13, 2023 the Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller and the Montclair Township Council issued a proclamation recognizing and celebrating the public holiday of Juneteenth in Montclair, New Jersey. The Council also recognized the Friends of the Howe House as one of Community Partners that collaborates on the annual planning committee of this celebration.
Montclair Little League Fundraises for Howe House
The Montclair Little League held its debut Juneteenth Home Run Derby last month to help Montclair Recreation Little League capital fund to pay for improvements to Montclair’s baseball facilities and Friends of Howe House.

Just before the winter break, we shared some fabulous news that our offer on the home was accepted. We are currently under contract and set to close later this month. This is a crucial first step in securing the James Howe property. Now, the next phase begins where we are charged with the task of fundraising the full cost of the home.
